Results of the 2009 European Elections |
Between 4 - 7 June 2009 the 27 member countries of the EU elected their representatives to the European Parliament, where 736 Members represent some 492 million EU citizens. A participation of 43 percent out of 388 million eligible voters marks one of the lowest turnouts in the history of the European elections. Click here for the preliminary European results of 8 June 2008. Click here for the results from Austria (German only). The final results will be published as soon as all the ballots are counted.

The Embassy of Austria welcomes its new Ambassador |
With great pleasure the Embassy of Austria in Washington, D.C., welcomes its new Ambassador, Dr. Christian Prosl. He earned the title of Dr. Iuris in 1969 from the University of Vienna. After serving in the Austrian Army Special Forces he continued his studies and joined the Austrian Foreign Ministry in 1977. His assignments included esteemed positions e.g. in London, Los Angeles and also Vienna. The Embassy of Austria is very proud to be led by such a high-ranking and notable diplomat.

EU Open House 2009 - A great Success |
With Apple Strudel, wine specialities and lots of Austrian Charm the Embassy of Austria welcomed more than 2,500 visitors during the Open House Day on May 9. For this new record attendance the Embassy of Austria and the organizational teams of the Embassy of the Czech Republic as well as the European Commission would like to express their sincere gratitude to all visitors.

Latest information for travelers on the spread of Swine Flu |
The latest spread of the H1N1 Virus, or "Swine Flu", to the United States and Europe has caused the World Health Organization to raise the pandemic alert to "high" (phase 4). Although the WHO does not recommend restrictions on international travel, all travelers to the United States and Mexico are advised to consider specific measures related to protection against swine influenza when visiting either of these countries. Linz 09: European Capital of Culture |
Linz, the capital of Upper Austria, is the European Capital of Culture 2009, along with Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Linz is not just the home to the steel industry, but also to a well-funded and vibrant music and arts scene. The European Capital of Culture is a city designated by the European Union for a period of one calendar year during which it is given a chance to show case its cultural life and development. During the year hundreds of different cultural events will take place in Linz.
